Late Dr. Sandeep Wagh Memorial Award to Dr. S.Natarajan

Dr. S Natarajan, CMD, Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai was bestowed with the late Dr. Sandeep Wagh Memorial Award for his splendid contributions in the field of Ophthalmology, on Sunday 5th September, at the “Uveitis Conference”. The award was conferred to him at the hands of Dr. S.B. Kelkar, Director, NIO (National Institute of Opthalmology), in the presence of Dr.N S D Raju, Vice President, All India Ophthalmic Society, Dr. T.P. Lahane, President, MOS, Dr. Jignesh Taswala, President, POS, Dr. P.N. Nagpal, Chairman, Retina Foundation and many other eminent personalities.

The Uveitis Conference was organized by National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO), Pune, Retina Foundation, Ahmedabad & Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai under the aegis of Maharashtra Ophthalmic Society & Poona Ophthalmological Society. The program included the latest developments in Uveitis Management with World renowned speakers coming from different parts of the country & also from abroad. It was a two day conference held at Yashada on 4th & 5th September 2010.

The late Dr. Sandeep Wagh Memorial Award was given to Ophthalmologists for their outstanding contributions in the field of Ophthalmology. It has been conferred for the last 12 years on ophthalmologists who apart from professional skills are also keen on using their skills for the betterment of the society and is a good human being as well. Dr S.B. Kelkar started this award in order to appreciate these qualities in other ophthalmologists and also pay homage to Dr. Wagh. This award is annually given in NIO conference under aegis of Poona Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. S. Natarajan hails from a long line of Ophthalmologists. His father Dr. N. S. Sundaram and grandfather Dr. Nataraja Pillai, were some of Chennai’s most respected Ophthalmologists.

This third generation Ophthalmologist did his MBBS from Chennai. In 1982 he completed his post graduation in Ophthalmology from Chennai. From 1984 to 1988, he worked as a Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, under Dr. S.S. Badrinath, at the Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. In 1988 he joined the Taparia Institute of Ophthalmology, Bombay Hospital and continued his work there till 1990. Later that year, he took the decisive step of laying the foundation stone of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital and has continued serving the institution in his capacity as Director, surgeon and guide to a large community of Vitreo Retinal Specialists. He is considered one of the most proficient and high profile young surgeons involved in academics throughout his clinical practice and he has been honored with accolades from around the world.
